“Helping children to put their hope in the Lord” “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)
Overview
The Bible teaches that those who put their hope in the Lord will soar “On Eagle’s Wings.” Everyone puts their hope somewhere and hope in anyone or anything else is purely wishful thinking, speculation and chance. Maybe things will work out and maybe they won’t. But hope in the Lord is a sure thing - you just can’t loose. The word “Hope” from this passage in Isaiah is translated from the Hebrew word “Quavar” and it literally means “to bind together by twisting”. So, hope in the Lord means binding ourselves together with Him, a sure thing that always makes us soar “On Eagle's Wings”. Binding ourselves together with Him inspires courage in us, gives us strength in the midst of struggle, allows for change where we need it, and ultimately makes it possible for the Lord to meet the needs we have in our lives. This four lesson unit focuses on each of these results as seen in the lives of people who put their hope in the Lord. All events are taken from actual accounts in the book of Luke and spotlights the stories of how these people's hope in the Lord caused them to soar "On Eagle's Wings".
Unit at a Glance
Lesson #1 — “Hope Inspires Courage”
“When I hope in God He gives me courage” Luke 18:35-43
No matter what the odds are against us, when we bind ourselves together to the Lord and put our hope in Him, that hope inspires courage in us and lets us soar “On Eagles’ Wings”. A blind beggar on the road to Jericho had the courage to go against the crowd and continue shouting out to get Jesus’ attention. His hope in the Lord inspired courage in him and as a result Jesus healed him.
Lesson #2 — “Hope Gives Strength”
“When I hope in God He gives me strength” Luke 7:36-50
No matter what other people may think of us, when we bind ourselves together to the Lord and put our hope in Him, that hope gives us strength in the midst of struggles and lets us soar “On Eagles’ Wings”. A woman who had lived a sinful life found the strength to approach Jesus in worship even though all the people around her were looking down on her. Her hope in the Lord gave her strength to worship the Lord and as a result Jesus forgave her sins.
Lesson #3 — “Hope Allows Change”
“When I hope in God He helps me to change” Luke 19:1-9
No matter what mistakes we have made, when we bind ourselves together to the Lord and put our hope in Him, that hope allows for change where we need it and lets us soar “On Eagles’ Wings”. Zacchaeus, a tax collector who cheated people out of their money, was completely changed after he met Jesus and had Him stay at his house. His hope in the Lord allowed for true change to come in his life and as a result he stopped cheating and repaid the people he had cheated.
Lesson #4 — “Hope Meets Needs”
“When I hope in God He takes care of my needs” - Luke 8:42-48
No matter what needs we may have in our lives, when we bind ourselves together to the Lord and put our hope in Him, that hope makes it possible for God to meet our needs and lets us soar “On Eagles’ Wings”. A woman who had been sick for 12 years and had tried everything possible to get well, was finally healed by God when she reached out to touch the robe of Jesus. Her hope in the Lord made it possible for her need to be met and as a result was healed from a terrible sickness.
